Black day for democracy
Mar 8 2008 by Andrew Flynn, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
IT was a very “black” day for the citizens of the UK when Gordon Brown denied what the French and Dutch have already expedited in the consultation process, that of “public opinion” in the shape of a EU referendum on the “new” member states constitution.
This to many makes a complete mockery of the western powers instigating ‘democracy’ in Iraq and Afghanistan, where British troops are dying weekly to install such a process and uphold its democratic ideals!
Be fully aware that this betrayal of true democracy by the Labour Party will not go unpunished at the next election. While some politicians may fool some of the people, others see this ‘United States of Europe’ with Tony Blair at the helm a firm reality!
Moreover, when next travelling to Greece and Spain etc ask the local population what they think to the euro against the former peseta and drachma? Commodity inflation since its introduction has been rampant and in no way did the founder members of the EU envisage a group of 25 nations instead of the original eight or nine! Hence the people of the UK require an opinion on the current constitution that is not what the British people originally agreed several years ago.
I urge our local MPs to have the guts to stand up for the Tory amendment and vote for the people and thus not become European pawns in a very large game. Let us see true democracy at work! This should have been a free Commons vote and thereby let those elected by the people be accountable to their constituents and not to their political masters!
