Why St George should be tackling the problems caused by smoking

MAY I respond to your front page (May 14) about St George campaigning for smokers’ rights?

Someone should tell this unhappy hero that smoking kills people and does it in most unpleasant ways. You go blue in the face and struggle desperately for breath for months on end before finally gasping your last to the great distress of your family and anyone who is a witness.

Does he really wish this on his customers?

This is to say nothing of the well documented damage to unborn babies, the thousands of deaths caused by fire raising smokers whether through falling asleep or simple carelessness. The government has a duty to protect its citizens – even against their own stupidity and I for one am very pleased with the new law if only because you can return from a night out without your clothes stinking and your mouth tasting foul.

It is a good law which should be appreciated by everyone and a heavy fine for law breakers seems highly appropriate
