I MUST say that I am in complete agreement with Arthur Quarmby in his open letter to Clr Ken Sims (Mailbag May 13). Huddersfield must be the only town in the country to have no name signs. However, I would add that WE are not ashamed of our town; - it’s the Kirklees councillors who are ashamed of it....

DO readers know that the Government is carrying out a consultation that is likely to lead to further cutbacks in adult education; ie, day and evening classes? Ironically May 17 to 23 is Adult Learners’ Week, which celebrates all forms of adult learning....

FRIDAY, May 9, was Europe Day and for most people in Huddersfield it went un-noticed. Kirklees failed even to fly the European Union flag on the Town Hall. There are three poles and only one was in use, flying the Union Flag (rather tatty looking, needs replacing), so there was no excuse for not celebrating with an EU flag as well....

THE artist’s impression of the proposed new Tesco superstore (Examiner May 16) shows Southgate with two lanes for traffic on both sides. Is this a mistake or is the future going to look bleak for traffic using Southgate?...

BARRY GIBSON is concerned that pensioners will suffer expensive bus fares to travel to the Post Office to buy stamps (Examiner, May 14). Doesn’t he know that over-60s get free bus travel after 9.30am?...
