Huddersfield, not Kirklees!

I MUST say that I am in complete agreement with Arthur Quarmby in his open letter to Clr Ken Sims (Mailbag May 13). Huddersfield must be the only town in the country to have no name signs. However, I would add that WE are not ashamed of our town; - it’s the Kirklees councillors who are ashamed of it.

In 2005 I was at the ceremonies which accompanied the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the twinning link between Huddersfield and the French town of Besançon; I was filming them for Huddersfield Video and Ciné Club.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Fearnley, referred to the historic link between Kirklees and Besançon; this despite the fact that Kirklees only came into being in 1974. However, the French mayor, M Jean-Louis Fousseret, insisted, as I recall, on referring to Huddersfield rather than Kirklees.

So at least, someone got it right!
