  • Loss of language

    | Reader Letters

IS it just an indication of my increasing age and grumpiness or do other readers abhor the words, phrases, voice inflections and body language which younger people adopt in their quest to appear “uber” cool. Read

  • Sickening sight

    | Reader Letters

WHAT a sickening sight to see Des Browne, Defence Secretary, at the coming home of more bodies from the war in Afghanistan and the weasel words that he and his colleague (the other Brown) used at the homecoming. Read

  • A dog’s life

    | Reader Letters

CURRENT events have brought to mind an oft-told tale about a greyhound owner. His pride and joy had developed a tendency to veer to the right, thus losing races. He consulted a noted trainer who suggested he attach a weight to the left side of the animal. “Put a piece of lead in its ear,” he said. Read

  • Car cash for Kirklees!

    | Reader Letters

I WOULD imagine it was pretty safe to park anywhere in the Huddersfield area over the weekend without fear of receiving a parking ticket, with the exception of the roads surrounding Greenhead Park. Read

  • Spelling Bee takes wing

    | Reader Letters

I WOULD like thank all the children who took part in the Spelling Bee in Huddersfield University on Friday night for a wonderful competition, culminating in a ‘spell off’ that kept everyone enthralled to the last. Read

  • Have a smokers’ snug

    | Reader Letters

I THINK it’s wrong of the Aden View home in Primrose Hill to stop Elizabeth Hobbs and other residents smoking. Let’s not forget Aden View is Elizabeth’s home and folk are allowed to smoke in their homes. Why not provide a smoking snug? This blanket ban has been wrong from the start. Would it not be better if public houses etc. had the choice – which is becoming very scarce at the moment in this country – to be smoke free or not. Then everyone would be happy. Read

  • Caught at the checkout!

    | Reader Letters

AS someone who tries to do their bit for the environment I was very pleased when Morrisons supermarket removed the plastic bags from the checkouts. Read

  • Democracy is a referendum

    | Reader Letters

I FEEL I must comment on the letter from Euro-MP Richard Corbett (“Time for Irish compromise” Mailbag June 21). He says he wants to make the EU more democratic. If that is the case why is he not pushing for a referendum for the British people. Read

  • Smoking ban blasted

    | Reader Letters

ELIZABETH Hobbs’ smoking ban (“Care home bosses stop Elizabeth, 89, smoking in her room,” Examiner June 20) is absolutely disgusting. But sadly there are many like her. Read

  • What about the promised vote?

    | Reader Letters

RICHARD Corbett Euro-MP (the voice of Yorkshire and Humberside; I think not!), what planet are you living on? Sorry, I’ve just remembered; it’s that gravy train in Brussels. Read

  • Guild’s many thanks

    | Reader Letters

MAY I thank members and friends who helped raise £760 for this year’s charity. The cheque will be presented at our next meeting, July 9 at 7.30pm at Broad Oak Bowling Club, to the Forget Me Not Trust. New members are always welcome; we meet every second Wednesday of the month. Read

  • Well done the police for your weekend swoop on village pub!

    | Reader Letters

LAST weekend my local village pub was swooped upon by six members of the local police force. What was the heinous crime committed to warrant such a show of numbers? Serving alcohol to a minor. Read
