Casting the first stone

YOUR reporter needs to read the planning application for the proposed hotel at Aspley Marina more carefully (Examiner July 11). It is not proposed to build it in stone as he claims. The ground floor will be “reconstituted stone” but the three upper floors will be cream coloured render – hardly appropriate for a building in a predominantly stone area facing the listed canal basin.

Many readers will remember that Sainsbury’s were forced to build their adjacent store of local stone instead of their preferred brick. Let us hope that today’s planners adopt the same standards when appraising this application.
