A COLLECTION of art work by Dewsbury artists will go on show next weekend.

Dewsbury Art Group will showcase their work at the town hall.

And there is an exhibition within an exhibition, as it features a series of watercolours by David Martin, of Thornhill.

David said: “I have always loved drawing and painting and spent many hours as a boy sketching anything and anybody I came across.

“This resulted in a lifelong interest in landscape and architecture.”

His love of art was further advanced after he won the O Level Art Prize while at Batley Grammar School, he was presented with a book on JMW Turner, which he said changed his life.

David went on to develop his love of painting, and had his first solo exhibition in 1971.

The artist added: “I work mainly from 'plein air' watercolour sketches, colour notes and reference photographs and usually produce the finished oil or watercolour painting in the studio.

His works have been included in exhibitions from Batley to India and Australia.

He is currently developing a studio and gallery at his Thornhill home where his watercolour sketches and photographs are created.

He has recently been commissioned to produce a portrait of swimmer Eileen Fenton – the former Channel swimmer from Dewsbury, which will go on show at Dewsbury Museum.

David Wood of the Dewsbury Art Group, said: “David Martin is an unassuming man and a discerning painter with a fine eye for composition, strong skills in handling colour in a variety of media and a sure hand at drawing. ”
