Almost 70 paintings are on show at Batley in the Dewsbury Arts Group spring exhibition.

The exhibition, which runs until April 12, covers a broad range of styles, media and techniques.

Artist Dennis Palmer, who has several paintings included in the exhibition, has been focusing on his artwork since retirement back in the early 90s.

Morley-based Dennis, now 77, was born in Nottingham but moved to Yorkshire to attend Bretton Hall college teacher training in music, arts and drama.

He taught art at Batley Boys and at West Park.

Dennis only found time to keep up to sketchbook work while he was teaching, but his art blossomed when he retired.

He has exhibited widely around the Yorkshire area but has never held a one-man show. But that will be put right in May when he shows work at the Dewsbury Arts Group theatre.

Also exhibiting at Batley is John Lewis who after attending Wheelwright College, went on to work in local government as a Housing Manager in Wakefield.

John has been painting for 30 years and that has become full-time since he retired 10 years ago.

“I explore the nature of human existence and definitions of reality”, he says.

“All my work starts with chaos and then I try to tease the image out of that.

“The work presented in this year’s DAG exhibition touches on issues of illusion, vertical time and simply just trying to understand it all.”

You can see more of his work on his website, www.john-lewis-artist.co.uk .

Artist Bruce Mulcahy’s work is featured on the exhibition poster.

Sue Daniels, President of the Arts Group, helped with the selection of works.

“We’ve had the usual high standard of work submitted, with a good variety of media and some really interesting ideas explored” she said.

“There are a few I’d really like to buy; hopefully our visitors will feel the same!”

Batley Art Gallery’s exhibition coordinator, Mark Milnes, is pleased to have the group back at the exhibition space.

“Dewsbury Arts Group’s exhibitions are always amongst our most popular here at the gallery”, he says.

Further information about the exhibition can be found on the group’s website www.dewsburyartsgroup.info , or by contacting Batley Library on 01924 326021.
