Yet another fine mess – Laurel and Hardy style – is on the cards at the Rex Cinema in Elland.

The cinema is hosting its annual Laurel and Hardy film fun night on Saturday, March 21, with showings of feature movie Sons of the Desert and short two-reelers Liberty, County Hospital and One Good Turn.

Stan Laurel, who was born in Cumbria but ended up making his home in California, made 73 short films with Oliver Hardy and 26 feature films between 1926 and 1952.

The films chosen for the Rex event are from the period 1929 to 1934 when the comics were at their peak.

Liberty, from the silent era, will have live accompaniment on the Conn organ by Huddersfield musician Ben Hinchcliffe.

Charles Morris, proprietor of the Rex, says the fun night attracts people of all ages. He added: “We get members of the Laurel & Hardy ‘tents’ as the fan club is known, coming from far away and some dress up in all their regalia.

We also hope to have some Laurel & Hardy memorabilia stalls. But more than anything it is the atmosphere of 300 people laughing in unison at the antics of these two clowns which really makes the night.”

The showing begins at 7.30pm and tickets are £5.
