Elland Silver Youth Band is to headline this year’s Youth Proms at the Lawrence Batley Theatre next week.

The young musicians will be joined by choirs from three Huddersfield schools - St Patrick’s Primary; Christ Church Academy, Woodhouse; and the specialist singing group from Colne Valley Vocal Academy.

Previous prom nights have been a sell-out for the organisers, the Friends of the Lawrence Batley Theatre, who are currently celebrating their organisation’s 21st birthday.

“This is our big fund-raiser of the year,” says Vivien Uff, co-ordinator of the proms. “Over the past 21 years we have raised more than £70,000 for the theatre.”

The concert, Movies at the Proms, will feature old favourites such as Over the Rainbow and Hakuna Matata, songs from Jungle Book and Mammia Mia as well as the latest hits from Frozen in a programme that will appeal to both the young and not-so-young.

Featured soloist for the evening is Kirsty Haigh, who has performed at the proms on a number of occasions, and her accompanist is Emma Binns. The duo will lead the flag-waving finale.

The Youth Proms has become a major musical event in Huddersfield, a tradition that the Friends want to continue. But the group needs help. “We are looking for new members to come and join us and take over the running of the event,” says Vivien.

Tickets for the show, which starts at 7pm on Wednesday, November 19, are £6 and £10 from 01484 430528 or www.thelbt.org
