A new version of the classic Bizet opera Carmen comes to the Lawrence Batley Theatre this month courtesy of Mid Wales Opera.

Saturday, September 13, will see the English premiere of the adaptation of this much-loved work, which was translated into English by the comedian Rory Bremner. It will be a welcome return to the LBT stage for the Welsh company.

The captivating tale of the wilful gypsy Carmen, who seduces the naive soldier Don Jose and then betrays him with tragic consequences, is based on a novella and was first performed in 1875. Although it is now one of the most-performed operas, it was not particularly successful initially and Bizet died before its popularity started to grow.

The Toreador song from Act 2 is known even to those who have not seen a single opera.

This adaptation has been directed by the world famous opera director Jonathan Miller.

Mid Wales Opera has visited the LBT in the past with Madame Butterfly, Don Giovanni and Albert Herring. It is one of the foremost British touring opera companies and now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The LBT is hosting an introductory workshop to opera with artists from Mid Wales Opera on Friday, September 12, from 2 until 3.30pm. Tickets are free for the event but need to be booked.

A pre-show talk is also taking place before the performance the following day.

Tickets for the opera are from £6 to £20 from the box office 01484 430528 or www.thelbt.org
