It’s hard to believe that the singing group Colne Valley Boys is four years old.

It started in March 2010 and since then the choir has appeared in a number of concerts throughout the region.

Quite a lot of the boys have been with the choir since it started and a number of new boys have joined and there are now 30+ members.

Choir treasurer Matt Houston said: “Some of the older boys’ voices have started to change which gives an opportunity to add lower parts to their singing.

They rehearse on a Monday evening in term-time starting with the youth choir at 5.30pm and the seniors join them at 6pm for a joint rehearsal until 6.30pm and then the seniors continue till 7pm.”

The choir is conducted by Thom Meredith, principal of Kirklees Music School and musical director of Colne Valley Male Voice Choir.

It continues to be a busy spring for the boys with rehearsals culminating in three appearances in March.

The first one is at the Kirklees Music School’s South Kirklees Showcase Concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday, March 20 at 7pm, where the boys will entertain the audience during the stage changes of the 500 young people from the Colne Valley, Holme Valley, Huddersfield and Shelley Music Centres.

The second will be at the Music For Youth Regional Festival Series at Colne Valley High School on Sunday, March 23 in the afternoon.

The final concert will be at 7pm on Saturday, March 29, at St James’ Church, Station Road, Slaithwaite, with special guests Colne Valley Male Voice Choir.

The boys are rehearsing a varied programme of songs in a number of different languages including Spanish, Latin, Macedonian, South African and English and from modern pop through to folk songs – by such names as the Foo Fighters, Green Day, Bastille, Coldplay, Owl City, Andrew Lloyd Webber and including items from The Lion King.

The group is always looking for new members and would welcome any boys aged between eight and 16 at one of the rehearsals at Slaithwaite Conservative Club on a Monday night in term-time.
