Working on the premise that everyone enjoys a good laugh, the new season at the Lawrence Batley Theatre opens on Thursday, September 4, with a Comedy Cellar event.

Headlined by James Dowdeswell, whose claims to fame include playing the Count in Ricky Gervais’ Extras and appearances on Celebrity Deal or No Deal with Jimmy Carr and Russell Howard’s Good News, the show promises to blow away those end of summer blues.

James, a star of comedy club events up and down the country, has travelled the world with his one-man show, which has been hailed by reviewers as ‘beautifully twee’, a ‘feel-good comedy with a capital F’ and ‘intelligent and inventive’.

Originally from Bristol, the 40-year-old gagsmith is currently filming his own comedy show about wine called James Dowdeswell - Black Belt in Wine.

James will be supported by Liverpool Comedian of the Year title-holder Adam Rowe and Russ Cutts, a plain-talking Barnsley lad.

The compere for the show is Anthony J Brown.

Tickets are £9 and £7, from the box office on 01484 430528 or www.thelbt.org . The season continues with monthly comedy cellar events – the next will be on October 9 with Kevin Dewsbury and Kate Lucas.
