For residents of this land-locked part of Yorkshire, the new exhibition at the Harrison Lord Gallery in Brighouse offers a ray of sunshine, a refreshing sea breeze and a trip to the seaside.

The title of the collection is Coastal and among the 50 original paintings and prints are many that showcase the beauty of the Yorkshire coastline.

In fact, among the featured artists in this major show are four Yorkshire-based painters and print-makers, including Leeds-based Mark Sofilas, an Australian by birth, whose dramatic and colourful oils depict the grandeur of his adopted county and feature Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Gallery owner Steven Harrison Lord says the exhibition has a genuine feelgood factor. He explained: “As an island race I think we all have some connection with the coast, whether it’s a day trip to Filey or messing around in boats and this exhibition captures all that emotion. It’s bound to bring back happy memories and put a smile on your face.”

Steven commissioned several artists to produce work for the show and while focusing on Yorkshire he has also included paintings and prints of the Welsh and Scottish coastlines.

Many of the Yorkshire artists featured have exhibited at the Brighouse gallery before and will be familiar to regular visitors. They include Sheila Venamore, who lives in North Yorkshire; Stephen Todd from Sheffield, and Bridget Wilkinson from Whitby. Several artists have a national profile. Non-Yorkshire artists are represented by Rachel Grant, Val Jordon, Barbara Renton-Wood and Ken Hammond.

From soft watercolours to colour-infused acrylics and vibrant prints the exhibition offers the chance to escape to the coast for an afternoon without leaving the area.

It is open until August 28.
