The Fixby Songbirds, a choir formed just two years ago, has won a place at the finals of the Women’s Institute Singing for Joy competition early next year.

The 26 choristers, drawn mainly from the Brighouse area, beat competition from eight other Northern choirs at the Kings Hall, Ilkley, to take a coveted place in the finals, which will be held in Birmingham in March 2015.

Founded by Katy Meredith and directed by Gail Crisp, the songbirds have sung at a number of local venues. If they win the WI competition they will find themselves at the Royal Albert Hall helping the organisation to celebrate its centenary - with the Queen in attendance.

In the meantime, the choir can be heard and seen on December 16 at St John’s Church, Clifton, at 7pm, and on November 29 at the Victorian Market in Brighouse.
