Halifax is to get seriously funny this autumn.

For October will see the first ever Halifax Comedy Festival spread across 10 days and featuring more than 50 events in 14 venues.

It will run over October half-term from Friday, October 23 to Saturday, October 31.

The festival is the brainchild of the Victoria Theatre in Halifax which, along with friends and partners, has been working hard over the last 12 months to create what will be one of the largest comedy festivals in the region.

Major names will include Alistair McGowan and Jasper Carrott with many more household names to follow. The two comedians will be on a double bill at the Victoria Theatre on Thursday, October 29.

Plus there will be 12 shows coming directly from the Edinburgh Fringe.

The comedy venues will be The Victoria Theatre, The Viaduct Theatre, Crossley Gallery at Dean Clough, The Workshop, Square Chapel, Haliwfax Minster, Halifax Central Library, Arden Road Social Club (The Archway Project), Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top, The Shay Stadium, The Artworks – 1830 Gallery, The Wellington Rooms and Orange Box Young People’s Centre.

And if all that wasn’t enough there will also be the festival’s very own Hidden Theatre, with more details to be announced soon.

You’ll also start seeing a few alpaca images springing up around the town. County Alpacas from Sowerby Bridge are supporting this year’s festival and will be out and about in Halifax during the festival.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities Clr Steve Sweeney said: “It’s really exciting news that Halifax will soon have its own comedy festival. The Victoria Theatre already has a reputation for bringing world class comedy to Halifax and the comedy festival will build on this, showcasing other fantastic Halifax venues and great comedy from both established and up and coming performers.

“The festival is a great way to not only discover your new favourite comedian, but perhaps also your new favourite comedy venue. Halifax has an incredible selection of wonderful venues, both large and small. Each space is unique and will be perfectly placed for the type of comedy they’ll be hosting.

“So whether you’re into stand up, alternative fringe events or family friendly workshops you’ll find it all at the Halifax Comedy Festival with a few surprises thrown in along the way.”
