Brass band players are wanted to take part in a large memorial concert.

Linthwaite Brass Band is looking for both those currently in brass bands and past players who would like to perform on June 27 at Golcar Providence Church in memory of the band’s stalwart member, John Iredale, who passed away in January aged 81.

John, of Golcar, dedicated 60 years of his life to the band. He took on roles as a player, conductor, teacher and band official, including conducting Linthwaite Junior Band and teaching young members who have gone on to become professional musicians.

He was also for many years the band’s secretary, treasurer, and an active committee member and had a long association with the Haydn Wood Music Festival, which has been attended by thousands of musicians from across the Colne Valley.

He pursued his passion while holding a day job as an environmental health officer.

Matthew Brook, a band member, said: “He was truly dedicated to the band and was inspirational, well-loved in the banding community and will be greatly missed.

“In his memory, Linthwaite Band are inviting players who wish to celebrate John’s life to join in a massed bands memorial concert.”

The band has also decided to donate a trophy to be presented annually at future Haydn Wood competitions.

Anyone interested in taking part should contact the band by email at linfit@linthwaitebrassband.co.uk.

In the email players should include their contact details, the instrument they will be playing and, if currently playing, the band they play with to help with the organisation of the concert.

Final details of the concert, including programme and rehearsal date, will be sent by Monday, June 1, to players who have replied.

Further details will be given out to those who do not wish to play but would like to attend nearer the date or can be obtained by contacting any Linthwaite band member.
