Paul Roberts kicks off the new organ concert season at the Rex cinema, Elland, this Sunday (January 18) at 2.30pm.

Paul is noted not just for his excellent musicianship but also his talents as an entertainer.

Born in Warrington, he moved to Somerset when he was still a boy and studied the piano and clarinet. He also developed an interest in church music and the organ.

As a student at Liverpool university he became a pupil of the legendary Noel Rawsthorne at Liverpool cathedral.

Paul composed the music for a touring production of Murder in the Cathedral by T S Eliot and holds several classical music performing and teaching diplomas.

On the lighter side he has performed at venues as diverse as the Royal Festival Hall and the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

He was also musical director for Butlins in Minehead and resident organist at Sandford Park in Dorset.

“It is many years since Paul played at the Rex,” said proprietor Charles Morris. “He lives so far away that it was always a bit of a problem encouraging him to come north, but we are very glad to see him again and we look forward to an excellent concert.”

Tea and biscuits will be served in the interval and there will also be a short film novelty to complete the programme.

The price is £5 for everyone.
