Put on your dancing shoes, pop the cork on some pink champagne and let Irving Berlin's toe-tapping score do the rest.

Top Hat has taken over the stage at the Grand Theatre, Leeds, bringing with it the glitz and glamour of 1930s high society, spectacular costumes and choreography you can't help but be mesmerised by.

Based on the 1935 RKO film starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the show weaves a comically complex tale of mistaken identity, whirlwind romance and of course, true love.

Alan Burkitt's charisma as stage star Jerry Travers oozes off the stage, and once he begins to dance, you can't take your eyes off his fancy footwork.

In Charlotte Gooch, who plays Dale Tremont, he has met his match — and their stunning routines to Isn't This A Lovely Day (To Get Caught In The Rain), Let's Face The Music and Dance and the spectacular Cheek To Cheek light up the stage.

And what makes the dance numbers all the more impressive is the incredibly talented supporting cast, bringing the show to life in a whirlwind of tap dancing, ballroom and glitz.

Of course, running beneath the musical score is a fast-flowing current of comedy — giving Clive Hayward (Horace Hardwick), Rebecca Thornhill (Madge Hardwick), Sebastian Torkia (Alberto Beddini) and John Conroy (Bates) their chance to shine.

John Conroy stole the short scenes he appeared in, whlile Sebastian Torka's rendition of Latins Know How has left me with a few mental images I wont forget in a hurry!

It's impossible to leave the theatre without a smile on your face (and a sudden urge to start tap dancing classes).

The music, choreography, comedy and sharp dialogue of the show, brought to life by lavish sets (the aeroplane and horse and carriage were particularly impressive props), transport you effortlessly into Berlin's glittering love story.

If you want to add some real sparkle to your festive season, go see it — you won't be disappointed.

But don't forget the pink champagne!
