Spot On Musical Theatre members are hoping their new production Betty Blue Eyes will bring home the bacon.

The comedy, based on the Alan Bennett story that was made into the film A Private Function, is about a group of Yorkshire folk who decide to fatten up a pig – during austerity Britain in 1947 – to consume at a celebration for the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Betty is the name of the pig, who proves to be much more difficult to handle than anyone imagined.

For Spot On, based at Moldgreen United Reformed Church, this will be a special show. It is the group’s 25th anniversary this year.

Founded by Margaret Warmington, producer of the celebratory show, and John C Burt, Spot On has produced a number of famous musicals – from Oliver and South Pacific to Acorn Antiques the Musical and Bugsy Malone.

One of the group’s favourite shows in recent years was Honk! by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who were also the writers of Betty Blue Eyes, which opened in London in 2011 with Sarah Lancashire in the cast.

The Spot On cast includes Elizabeth Priest, also the choreographer; Paul Lomas; Jane Birdsall and her husband John, creators of a Betty Blue Eyes puppet pig.

Other faces who will be well-known to Spot On regulars include Billy Walker, Steve Crowther, Leon Waksberg, Melanie Duff and Debbie Mann.

Opening on Wednesday, May 18, for four nights from 7.15pm (and weekend matinee on Saturday, May 21, from 2.15pm), the show can be seen at Moldgreen URC.

Tickets are £8 and £10 from 07766 881659.
