A new season of entertainment begins next month at the Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Calderdale with comedian Robert Newman and his first full-length show for seven years.

The journalist, novelist and activist brings New Theory of Evolution to the Halifax venue on Saturday, September 13, combining humour and observational comedy with social and political ideas.

He is the thinking man and woman’s comedian, with reviews frequently commenting on the amount of information he manages to impart to audiences in a packed 90-minute slot.

The season moves on with music by a wide range of performers, from jazz and folk to classical and musical theatre, including a concert by the Orchestra of the Square Chapel on September 21; performance by the Absolute Kinks tribute band on October 11; a gig by My Sweet Patootie (inset), a modern-day music hall acoustic band from Ontario; and a tribute to Simon and Garfunkel in November. There’s drama with a strong local feel, when Marsden-based Mikron Theatre performs Troupers and ‘Till the Cows Come Home in early October, and for those with a taste for the classics the London Contemporary Theatre Company is bringing the Dickens classic Great Expectations to the venue.

With nearly 70 different shows from now to the end of the year – covering music, drama, poetry, Shakespeare, children’s theatre, cabaret, vintage film and choral singing – this is a little theatre with a big programme.
