HONLEY Male Voice Choir has appointed Sue Ogden (pictured) as its new accompanist.

Sue, a teacher who is well known to local concert and theatre audiences, will take up her duties at the beginning of January following the departure of John Oldfield.

She was born in Durham and started piano lessons at the age of eight. She graduated from Huddersfield Polytechnic in 1978 with a BA degree in music.

Sue then gained a teaching certificate at Leeds Polytechnic and taught for three years, mainly in primary schools in the Huddersfield area.

She gave up full-time teaching to start a family.

She gained performer’s diploma in 1986 and taught the piano and co-ordinated music training for nursery nurses at Huddersfield Technical College for a number of years.

She returned to full-time primary school teaching in the early 1990s.

She now teachers music and RE to Year 5 pupils at Honley Junior School.

Sue accompanies the Huddersfield Singers at their Monday evening rehearsals.

She has also accompanied many soloists, including daughters Debra and Sarah, who hope to become professional singers.

For more than 20 years Sue has been a member of The All Music Consort, an amateur music society which performs informal concerts at St Paul’s Church, Armitage Bridge.

Sue, who accompanies the annual Primary Schools Music Festival at Huddersfield Town Hall, is a committee member and an accompanists for Holmfirth Music Festival.

She has accompanied Woodhouse Operatic Society for its last four shows at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Honley MVC has an outing at Huddersfield Town Hall when it performs A Moment in Time, on October 11.

Guests are Gerald Bentall and sister Myvanwy Bentall, the Robin Dewhurst Jazz Quartet, the Barbara Peters School of Dancing and members of Honley Ladies’ Choir as Salvation Army girls.

Start time is 7.15pm and tickets priced £7 to £13.50 are available from tourist offices in Huddersfield (01484 223200) and Holmfirth (01484 222444).
