FLAIR, drama and romance will be in the air with the full bodied Russian Romanticism at Huddersfield Town Hall.

A highlight of the Kirklees Concert Season, the Orchestra of Opera North welcomes two world-class artists renowned for their interpretations of Russian Romanticism music, conductor Jac van Steen and pianist Peter Donohoe, for what is sure to be a compelling evening of music making.

Regularly performing to full capacity in Huddersfield Town Hall, Opera North’s evening is one of romance.

Liadov’s ‘An Enchanted Lake’, displaying the myriad of colours of French Impressionism, makes for a refreshing contrast to the power and passion of Rachmaninov’s ‘Piano Concerto No.3 in D Minor’ and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No.6 in B Minor Pathétique’.

Jac van Steen is a world famous conductor, having worked with a multitude of renowned musical organisations such as London Sinfonietta, Royal Scottish Orchestra, The Hallé, CBSO Birmingham, and Deutsches National Theatre Weimar. He is currently Principle Guest Conductor with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, having made his debut with them at the BBC Proms in 2005, and General Music Director of Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Theatre Dortmund.

Pianist Peter Donohoe is a prolific musician, performing as a visitor at the BBC Proms 17 times.

He has enjoyed unprecedented success since becoming a joint winner of the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, receiving the ‘Grand Prix International du Disque Liszt’ and the ‘Gramophone Concerto Award’ for his recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.2.

There are three concerts left in the Kirklees Concert season, culminating on Thursday, May 31, with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert.

Russian Romanticism is at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday, April 12, at 7.30pm.

The concert is preceded by a Talking Music session at 6.40pm.
