THERE’S a celebratory air about the opening concert of Holmfirth Choral Society’s new season.

Most of the programme at Holmfirth Civic Hall is devoted to the work of Edward Elgar.

The concert, on November 17, opens with his piece The Music Makers, which includes references to works which Elgar had written earlier in his life.

The concert’s featured soloist is Margaret McDonald (pictured), a mezzo soprano who is known for her performances of both The Music Makers and Elgar’s Sea Pictures. Both pieces are included in the programme and Margaret will receive a warm welcome from the Choral with whom she sang these works 16 years ago.

The evening will continue with more Elgar including Lux Aeterna, a vocal setting of Nimrod arranged by John Cameron plus, The Dance and Lullaby, two songs from the Bavarian Highlands.

The programme’s other work will be by Johannes Brahms, a composer who influenced Elgar and was much admired by him.

Brahms wrote two sets of love songs, Liebeslieder and New Liebeslieder and the Holmfirth audience will hear the former scored for mixed choir and piano duet played by Geoffrey Lockwood and Jean Collison.

Ken Rothery will conduct the concert which marks the start of his 26th year with the society.

Tickets are £7 from Pat Steventon on 01484 687643 or on the door.
