EXPANDING foam, strings to another world and alter egos form part of an exhibition of work by Huddersfield University students.

Work from around 30 first year Contemporary Art degree students is on show this weekend at the Byram Arcade.

They were all set a challenge – to create a piece of art with the theme of Alter Egos.

And they’ve used the theme to create unusual pieces of work for the Metonymy exhibition.

Student Fiona Wharmby, 19, said: “The work is in response to a project on the theme of Alter Egos.

“We all responded in very different ways to that and it makes the exhibition of our work very unique.

“My piece is called Stringstallation and it’s based on the theory of quantum mechanics.

“I looked a lot at the theory behind it and then interpreted that with the wool representing lines or corridors to other worlds.

“Emily created an unusual foam sculpture for her work and other students have used different materials for their work.”

It’s the first time many of the students, including Fiona, have exhibited their work publicly.

“It’s quite exciting,” Fiona added.

“We’re hoping to do something like it again because it’s been a great opportunity.”

Natalie Depledge, 21, has submitted her piece, Variance, to the exhibition.

She said: “It’s about standing out from the crowd and being different.

“I used moss paint and environmentally-friendly materials for my piece. Plus there’s foreign objects covered in moss on a table nearby.”

Natalie, from South Yorkshire, has exhibited before and her work currently in the Byram Arcade will go on show in Bradford.

“I’ve really enjoyed the project,” she added. “It’s been a brilliant experience and I’m really proud to be part of it.

“I’ve been applying for exhibition space and have sent proposals off and the Bradford gallery came back to me.”

Metonymy can be seen at the Byram Arcade this weekend with work on all four floors of the shopping arcade.
