It’s a HIGH-light of a “golden” summer for hundreds of Huddersfield families.

A spectacular display of sunflowers and an Olympic-themed Maize Maze at Cawthorne are proving a popular day-out destination again this year – particularly given Team GB’s massive success at the Rio Games.

And that’s a relief for owner Sarah Williams, who was worried how her crop would recover after the heavy rains of June.

The Olympic-themed maize maze at Cawthorne has proved a popular attraction this summer

“The sunflowers this year are definitely the best I’ve had,” she said. “They are absolutely stunning. The maize has struggled a little because of all the rain in June, but most of it is now above head height.

“Maize is a tropical plant that likes warmth and sunshine, but we had thunderstorms and flooding on the farm in June with 17ml of rainfall in 20 minutes at one stage. Thankfully, it’s a distant memory now!”

The maze maize has been going for 16 years with Sarah and her family at Jowett House Farm creating a different design each year. This year, they have chosen an Olympics theme – with the maze cut to depict a sprinter coming out of the starting blocks – as well as an Olympics trivia quiz for children to complete as they go round the maze.

Sarah says the farm – which also includes tractor rides and ice cream among its attractions – draws more than half of its visitors from the Huddersfield and Holmfirth areas with generations of families making an annual outing to the site every year.

“We get a lot of grandparents and grandchildren,” she says. “We get people who first came here as children and are coming now as parents.

“I get a real buzz from seeing parents and children playing together and getting away from all those electronic gadgets.”

Once the summer season is over, the maize will be harvested in late October before the first frost. Planting for the new crop will begin next May.
