Hundreds of families braved the elements to celebrate the Christmas lights switch on.

Neither wind nor rain dampened the spirits of those gathered at Huddersfield's Piazza in front of the library for the annual event to mark the festive countdown.

Children and adults crammed onto the stairs to get the best glimpse of dancers, actors and singers invited by hosts of the night Pulse One radio, who got everyone in the party spirit before the big switch on moment.

Frozen characters mingled with the crowds while up and coming music star Thomas Teago got everyone dancing when he burst onto the stage for a high octane performance of some of his best songs.

He was followed by the big act of the night, CBeebies Rhyme Rocket stars Joe and Andy.

They got even the parents involved with singing and rapping to cheerful and silly rhymes.

But it was a visit from Santa himself that got kids screaming with delight when he appeared at the top of the library building, which he fearlessly abseiled down.
