Broadchurch created water-cooler moments when it first hit the airwaves in 2012 and while it was originally meant as a one-off series, the success of the hit ITV show- watched by nine million viewers a week - couldn't be ignored.

Viewers couldn't get enough of the murder mystery plot and the nation was gripped as each week we inched closer to finding out who killed schoolboy Danny Latimer. Set against the backdrop of a stunning Dorset beachside town, detectives Alec Hardy, played by David Tennant, and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) took us through many twists, turns and red herrings before the murder was solved.

And the second season begins tonight.

Tennant and Colman are back for a brand new series along with some familiar faces and some new faces.

I'm so excited I could murder someone! What time is it on?

Broadchurch series two begins tonight at 9pm on ITV. So be sure to settle down with a cup of tea and don't move a muscle - if the first series is anything to go by you won't want to miss a second of the action.

Remind me again what happened in series one?

Series one, of course, centred around the mystery of schoolboy Danny Latimer's murder. He was the local newspaper round boy and was seemingly the perfect little boy. Everyone in the town of Broadchurch became a suspect - including his parents - and soon secrets about the town's various members came out of the woodworks.

The series ended with the revelation that Danny had a somewhat inappropriate friendship with detective Ellie Miller's own husband Joe, who was obsessed with the boy. Joe was jailed for Danny's murder and Ellie and her son were left devastated.

As for Alec Hardy, the policeman with a heart problem was relieved of his duties at the end of the series as he didn't inform his superiors about his ongoing medical issues.

If they've solved the murder, why do we need another one?

The plot for series two certainly WON'T revolve around another murder.

Chris Chibnall told the Radio Times: “I promise we do not start with the discovery of another body beneath the cliffs.”

He insisted that the murder of a child in the small village has to be a one off, to stay true to reality.

He added: “I will not betray that. That's always been my pact with the viewer - this (Danny's murder) is an unusual event that has massive repercussions.'

“The feel of the show is slightly different this time... Grief is not our driving emotion this year.”

So what's it about?

While the exact storyline details have been kept top secret, the new series will be connected to the first series and there's even clues in the previous episodes.

Olivia Colman said: “You find out very early in the first episode which direction it’s going in and it’s an instant, ‘Whoooa!’.

“Chris set up a lot of things we never even thought about in the first series and now they’ve come to the fore.

“At the read-through we were going, ‘You sneaky b*****d’.”

Who's back?

As well as David Tennant and Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan will reprise their roles as Danny Latimer's grieving parents Beth and Mark. Arthur Darvill also returns as local vicar Paul Coates.

Who's new to the cast?

New arrivals include Meera Syal, Charlotte Rampling, Eve Myles and Oscar-nominated Marianne Jean-Baptiste. James D’Arcy plays a mysterious character called Lee.

Charlotte takes the role of resident Jocelyn Knight – it was near her house that Danny argued with the postman a week before his death. This unresolved issue is rumoured to offer a clue into how series two unravels.
