A slight drizzle of rain didn’t deter film fans from pitching up in St George’s Square to enjoy The Lego Movie.

The animated adventure comedy was first to fill the screen in Huddersfield town centre, kicking off a weekend of free movie delights for the Big Screen Weekend.

Folding chairs were provided for visitors, with deckchairs also available to hire, and food and drink stalls offering hog roast, Indian cuisine, prosecco, real ale, crepes and more.

As a few spots of rain hit the square at lunchtime the small audience hid under ponchos and umbrellas so they could continue enjoying the film.

The Lego Movie, starring Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell, was followed by Disney Pixar classic Toy Story at 3pm, with Mamma Mia set to bring ABBA to the square at 7pm.

The first Big Screen Weekend, with a second to follow in August, will screen family and kids’ movies chosen by Examiner readers.

Tomorrow, the movie magic will continue with Toy Story at 11am, Frozen sing-along at 3pm, then two silent films before Disney Pixar film Up! is shown at 7pm.

Then on Sunday, people will have a second chance to catch The Lego Movie at 11am, before Frozen sing-along at 3pm and Mama Mia once more at 7pm.

Two charities will benefit from the screenings – Kirkwood Hospice and the Huddersfield Town Foundation.

The Big Screen Weekends, running 10am-9pm each day, were conceived following successes at the Tour de Yorkshire and Festival of Light 2014, when films were shown in the square for thousands of visitors.

The Frozen sing-along at last year’s Festival of Light was particularly popular.
