Yorkshire folk are known for their friendliness — and Sir Patrick Stewart took it to the next level as he greeted his old pal Sir Ian McKellen on the red carpet.

The Mirfield-born star bumped into his mate on the red carpet at the premier of Mr Holmes at the Odeon Cinema in Kensington.

McKellen stars as Sherlock Holmes in the new movie, and said it had been 'extraordinary' to play the iconic role.

According to the Evening Standard, he said at a press conference earlier today: "I never had any ambition to play Sherlock Holmes.

"I thought I was too old, then this part of a 93-year-old Sherlock came along so it's been extraordinary.

"It's not ridiculous to play a character others have done. I've played Hamlet. So I think, don't deny yourself the possibility of playing a wonderful part. My Holmes is a script nobody else has done. This is a different aspect to him... It is another play on the familiar character."

Sadly McKellen and Stewart aren't going to reunite on set for the next X-Men movie, X Men: Apocalypse.

While McKellen will return as Magneto, Sir Patrick won't be appearing as Charles Xavier.

Stewart previously revealed: "Yes, I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal."
