Sky Atlantic's Fortitude will reach its conclusion tonight — and now Sky has announced that the show has been renewed for a second series.

The chilling drama, set in the eerie town of Fortitude, in the Arctic Circle, will return for 10 episodes next year written by series creator Simon Donald.

The debut episode of the show, which featured Holmfirth actress Jessica Gunning, had an audience of 2.66 million, with average audience figures of 1.69 million over the past 11 weeks — making it Sky Atlantic's most successful original commission.

Sky Atlantic's Channel Director Zai Bennett said: "Simon Donald created a unique and unsettling story which, week after week, has captivated our customers. I am absolutely delighted that we will be bringing Fortitude back next year with a story that promises to engage, challenge and enthral us all over again."

Creator Simon Donald added: "It's a privilege to return to Fortitude. It's a place where the real and the feared live side by side, where old dark secrets thaw out into the chill light of the arctic day. I'd never been anywhere like Fortitude before and I can't wait to go back."
