Coronation Street actress and former Huddersfield student Paula Lane revealed that viewers will see her character Kylie “crack” as the Platt family turn on each other after Callum’s shocking murder.
In Wednesday’s live episode, Kylie bludgeoned to death drug dealer Callum Logan as he attacked her sister-in-law Sarah, and husband David helped her dispose of the body.
Lane, who studied at the former Huddersfield Technical College, revealed that Kylie is currently in shock but will break down in three weeks’ time as tension builds between the three accomplices when the police begin to ask questions.
“Kylie’s just in shock,” she said. “I think it’s the most challenging storyline I’ve ever had to play out: I mean you don’t murder somebody everyday, but I’ve had to play it very numb.
“Sarah’s hysterical and crying whereas Kylie’s more in shock so I’ve had to strip it right back.
“Kylie gives the game to David: it becomes his task to get them out of it.
“It’s been quite difficult playing Kylie’s numbness and shock; you won’t see her crack until about three weeks’ time,” she confessed.
Speaking about how Kylie will cope with the murder, she said, “In a way something will have died in her too that night.
“Maybe a light has gone out, there’s a haunting that’s always going to be there and it’s David who’s got to try and carry her through.
“But as the weeks go on, lots more things come into play, they start turning on each other, it just becomes one big crazy fight for survival, it’s a mess,” Lane revealed.
In coming weeks, viewers will see Sarah, played by Tina O’Brien, struggling to keep their secret from the police, while Kylie and David’s marriage is tested by the pressure.
The burden of their guilt will only build when Kylie and David are confronted by Callum’s mum Marion, played by Susan Cookson, asking about her son’s disappearance.
“They’re trapped in this secret and it just escalates till they can’t control it any more,” she said.
But the actress promised fans that justice would be done for her crime.
“There’s a lot more to come for Kylie,” she said. “This storyline is going to provide a lot of drama for the Platts.
“But morally if you kill someone in soapland there has to be justice in the end so I guess I’ll just have to see what happens.
“I think it’s great that like me the viewers will be left wondering for a while,” she added.
Paula was born and brought up in Hebden Bridge and studied at the former Halifax Catholic High School. She then moved to study at Huddersfield Technical College, now Kirklees College, where she studied performing art.
She worked with several local amateur companies before moving to London to further her theatrical dreams.
She now lives in Manchester with her actor husband, who is also a former Huddersfield college student.
