Kirkheaton Primary School

We are a large primary school and we have children from 3 to 11 years old. Our work is based around helping all children to be successful in life. Part of our work is to enhance the children's life skills and knowledge. We would like them to become more involved with their local community and be an active part of it. We would love to spend this money on producing some new art work. We would love to do a joint project with our neighbouring school Dalton, and our community. We would make mosaics, felts, pots, sculptures, canvases and metal work and put these in and around the school and the community. The work would involve lots of the community meeting each other and working together. We would involve the church, the cubs/guides etc, local businesses and local people.

We support the groups in obtaining essential equipment to carry out their programmes. All units go on Pack Holiday, Camp or Sleepover events. We have Brownies who come to our Unit from Holly Bank special needs at Mirfield. We had two ramps built to enable them to come in their wheelchairs. We raise money by events for the upkeep and maintenance of our building. These include our main event which is a yearly Gala which just manages to cover the cost of utilities and minor repairs. Extra events are a Halloween party and occasional Coffee Mornings. After losing our roof in 2007, we still have a lot to do to refurbish our building.

Lindley Bowling Club

We are one of the oldest bowling clubs in the country established in 1894. We are tucked away, half way down Daisy Lea Lane (not to be confused with Lindley Liberal Bowling Club). We were going downhill but in the last seven years we have turned the club around. For example, by leafleting over 1,000 houses in the area for new members, running a course for new members (in which the Examiner helped with the publicity), reducing subs for the first year of membership, targeting social bowlers and bowlers of other clubs. This is difficult because our subs are 8 times more than the Liberal Club which has superior facilities. Notwithstanding the smallness of our club, we manage to have 10 teams. We need to continually try to attract new members and push to attract youngsters/children as they are our future. We have too many old members - of which I am one! Finally, bowling is our sole facility. We are now actively working with local junior schools to attract children (8 years and above) to achieve our objective of becoming a community bowling club but need smaller bowls for children, which is why we are seeking money from Wish.

Our club has a unique inclusion policy which begins on the pitch and continues into the running of club. All our signed players play the same time on the pitch irrespective of ability. Our motto success through progress signifies our ignorance of teams which are win at all costs, preferring to develop our players individually. As a team, we will deliver long term results and foster a healthy competitive and social environment, which all kids can be included in, irrespective of background, culture, and initial assessment of ability. In addition, players are not held in position decided by the coach, we try to accommodate movement in positions encouraging a natural creative style of play. We need winter raincoats to keep our U10's and U11's warm at training through the winter.

Lindley Pre-school Playgroup

Lindley playgroup is a volunteer, committee run, charity opened in 1989 offering childcare for 2-5 year olds in Lindley and the surrounding area (we have no catchment). We are the only non-commercial provider of childcare in Lindley and, unlike the private nurseries which charge high fees, we keep fees low so to make places available to all. Children over 3 are entitled to Nursery Education Funding and we charge nothing in addition to this. We support children with English as a second language and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. We employ 6 permanent staff. We'd spend the money on replacing existing equipment and resources that will make a difference to every child in our setting. First on our wish list are 6 large protected display boards and 1 white board. These will be fixed at child height inside the playgroup room and will provide an interactive working wall for the children. Together with the children we will create displays using their work to celebrate their achievements. Other items required include construction and den building materials in our outdoor area, new dressing up clothes, sand and water play equipment.

We have two qualified and CRB checked coaches per team and numerous committee members. We are constantly recruiting within all the local schools and have recently made Birchencliffe Cricket & Athletic Club our home. We have already completed work on our new field and our new changing facilities are currently under construction, which will hopefully be ready for use by next season. We have been established for more than 15 years and are still going strong. All funding is raised by us through various events, raffles, clothing sales, sponsorship and donations. We are constantly looking to the future and aiming to introduce the children to a safe and enjoyable environment, where they can make new friends and learn about the game of rugby league.

Marden Infants and Nursery School

Established in 1870 Marsden Infant and Nursery School is a community school serving the children of Marsden village and the surrounding area. We cater for approximately 200 children between the ages of 3 and 7 from a variety of social backgrounds. The staff, children, parents and governors work together to create a friendly and inclusive learning environment in which all members feel safe and secure, valued and respected. Together we create an atmosphere which is challenging, stimulating, exciting and fun, and where everyone is encouraged and supported to achieve their potential. We strive to be an inclusive school which provides equality of access to all pupils in an environment that fosters friendship, co-operation and high quality learning. We pride ourselves on being a hard working school and aim to strengthen our strong links with the local community. At Marsden we welcome parents, carers and children as partners in the education process. A successful partnership involves close co-operation, support and trust as well as recognising that the best education can only be provided when we have a shared vision and responsibility. To this end we operate an "open door" policy which welcomes everyone into the school.

Marsden Meet and Eat Lunchclub

We target the older generation of Marsden who may struggle to prepare good home-cooked food for themselves and who dont have the opportunity to socialise - something that we all take so much for granted. Run by volunteers we provide a two course hot meal, entertainment including a fortnightly tai chi exercise session, tea and biscuits and the opportunity to meet with friends every Wednesday from 10.30 until 1.30. We would like to put the money towards various activities and equipment in the early stages of our new lunch club. Marsden Scouts

Marsden Scouts caters for boys and girls from age 8 when they can join the beaver section, through to cubs and scouts, and explorers who are aged 14 to 18. The young people follow a varied programme of activities including everything from cultural visits, games and arts and crafts, to supporting the local community by undertakings such as litter picking and footpath maintenance and of course adventurous pursuits such as camping, hiking, canoeing, climbing, sailing and shooting. The young people are supported by a dedicated band of voluntary leaders and parent helpers. The group regularly participates in adventurous outdoor activities. In order to do this safely, specialist equipment must be provided. Much of our canoeing and camping equipment is ready for replacement, plus with growing numbers of young people joining the group we require more equipment in order to enable them all to take part. For many of the young people the scout group provides the only opportunity that they have to try out these activities and by doing so, grow their self confidence whilst of course having great fun with their friends at the same time.

Masters Explorer Scout Unit

MESU started half way through 2011 when a need was identified to provide Scouting for young people aged 14 - 18 in the Huddersfield South East area. With four high schools but only one unit on the very edge of the district, it was decided another unit should be opened more centrally to allow more young people the chance to access opportunities for personal development. Explorer Scouts of both genders, whatever their social or cultural background, take part in environmental projects, extreme sports, team building activities, first aiding activities, community projects and the Duke of Edinburgh's award as well as many other small activites which happen week on week which help develop the life skills. We are aiming to gather equipment to enable us to offer all levels of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to young people in the Huddersfield South East area.

Meltham Community Pre-School

Meltham Community Pre-school is opening this September at the Baptist Chapel in the heart of Meltham. We offer a fun and safe learning environment for preschool children aged two years old and above. We have a team of friendly, well qualified, experienced staff and are run by a group of volunteers that includes parents of preschool children. In addition to the regular morning sessions where children have fun, whilst learning to play together and making friends, we have a lunch club from 12.15pm - 1.15pm. For parents with children registered with us we offer a Drop and Shop ad hoc creche service for those times when it would just be easier to shop or keep an appointment without a little one in tow. We have just launched in new premises and whilst our indoor room is fabulous we need to create an outdoor play area for our children. Meltham U10s Football team

We are the U10s age group from Meltham AFC. We are currently under new management and are made up of 14 local school boys, all of which are friends either in or out of school. The majority have played for Meltham since they were 7. The boys have seen two team players leave last year and three new ones join this season. We are always looking for young, enthusiastic boys who enjoy their football and want to come along and play. To us it is not about winning all the time but about enjoying playing football. Our U10s team are in desperate need of a new kit and winter training gear. Due to our local home pitch not being suitable for use last season, we had to cancel many of our home games. Therefore not raising funds from the sale of raffle tickets, tea/coffee and tuck shop, so money is very tight this season. Boys have left and new boys have joined (of all different shapes and sizes) so not all the kit fits the boys. It would be a fantastic boost for the team to be all kitted out in a kit to suit their size and shape.

Mirfield and District Over 50s Group

The group meets each Friday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm. There is a wide variety of entertainment each week e.g. speakers, singers, slide shows, bingo sessions and a raffle. During the summer months, trips are arranged to many places of interest with a lunch or afternoon tea. Members meet the cost of these trips themselves, not from club funds. There is always a very successful Christmas party with a buffet, entertainment and each member receives a present. Approximately 70 members attend meetings each week and there is a waiting list. We need to assist with the cost of coach hire (s75 per week) to convoy the elderly (some over 90 years of age) and disabled, door to door to attend weekly meetings. All users make a contribution to the cost from their pensions etc. Without this service these members may never leave their homes each week.

Moor End Pyramid

Moor End and its partner primary school, Crosland Moor, are popular local schools who draw most of their students from the local area. The schools serve an area of high socio/economic deprivation. Our mission is for all young people to overcome their individual barriers to learning whilst enjoying and achieving highly. Attitudes to learning are very positive. We all have high aspirations and expectations that everyone should leave school with the skills and confidence to be able to take the next step in their lives. We pride ourselves on the high quality learning experiences that we provide for students. Paramount to this is the time we invest in building positive relationships with students. We also have the secondary resourced provision for students with visual impairment. The funds would be used to support learning and enrichment activities across the pyramid with particular emphasis on supporting families on a low income. Motherhub

Motherhub is a group for mums, run by mums with support from mums. We recently converted a disused storage room into a place where parents can come to meet other parents and where we can offer a support network for parents in our community. We also run a website with the aim of reducing social isolation that can lead to post natal depression and other issues. We run a weekly meet up for parents and children, a drop in service for people who need someone to listen to their problems, a dad's group, talks and workshops. Being a parent is difficult and often lonely. Motherhub can help make things a little easier. We would use the money to install a phone line and internet access for Motherhub and also for the monthly running costs. We would also look to provide training courses to our members who are parents in the local community.
