One of the best gastro pubs in the UK lies just outside Huddersfield.

The Shibden Mill Inn, near Halifax, has made the 2016 Top 50 Gastro Pubs list, compiled by gastropub owners, food writers, chefs and pub guide editors.

The pub, in Shibden Mill Fold, just a stone's throw from Shibden Park, is listed at number 44.

Judges praised the 17th century venue for its historical charm, noting that owner Simon Heaton had renovated the pub to retain its original features.

The pub also won points for its locally-sourced food and ingredients, showcasing the region's best fish, oulty, game, meat, fruit and vegetables.

Signature dishes at the Shibden Mill Inn include wild red deer rossini, venison liver pate, and 'pot-au-feu braised flank steak and oxtail fritter.

The pub also boasts a menu of Yorkshire artisan cheeses and serves Cask Marque accredited Yorkshire real ales.

The Top 50 Gastro Pubs list, sponsored by Estrella Damm, sees industry experts cast votes in six geographical regions to create a definitive list.

Pubs are also entered for specialist awards including Newcomer of the Year and Gastro Pub Chef of the Year.

This year's list includes two other Yorkshire gastro pubs - the Pipe and Glass in east Yorkshire and the Star Inn in York.

The Pipe and Glass, in South Dalton came second on the list, run by husband and wife team James and Kate Mackenzie.

The eatery, which has a Michelin star, was praised for its simple, traditional Yorkshire fayre, cooked with passion and attention to detail.

The Star Inn, in Harome, took third place, and was one of the first pubs in the country to be awarded a Michelin star.

Judges described the pub's menu as a 'culinary institution' and said it offered private dining 'fit for a king'.
