BHS will open a food store at its branch in Huddersfield on Thursday – with a range of offers to tempt shoppers through the door.

The food outlet, within the department store in The Shambles, is one of 20 the company plans to open before the end of October, after successful trials at three outlets across the country.

The Huddersfield food store will open from 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays, and is staging a number of offers, including vouchers giving £2 off when you spend £10 or more in store on your first two shops.

Other promotions include three bottles of wine for £10.

BHS has permission for 140 food shops to open within its existing 171 stores, but is expected to halt the roll out to allow staff to focus on Christmas trading before ramping it up again in January, with up to 60 more food stores opening next year.

It has an exclusive contract with wholesaler Booker, which provides and sources its food range, and hopes this will help it compete with Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys’ on price. It also hopes to grab a share of the market from Marks and Spencer.

Products include well-known branded foods, such as Heinz tomato ketchup, Pot Noodle and Cadbury’s chocolate. Booker’s own-brand value-ranges, aimed at shoppers on a budget and including tinned vegetables and unbranded tea bags, are also available.

A BHS spokeswoman said: “Three food stores were opened in 2014. This is part of the company’s strategic plan to move further into convenience food retailing and enhance the customer experience by modernising an initial 20 stores with new mannequins, innovative product displays and improved store design.”

Earlier this year, retail tycoon Sir Philip Green, who runs the Arcadia store group, sold BHS to Retail Acquisitions for £1.
