West Yorkshire is mad for trifle... and the scone is king in posh North Yorkshire.

As cake fans wait impatiently for the return of the Great British Bake Off, a study has revealed the nation's favourite sweet treats, county by county.

Using Instagram hashtags, GoCompare's clever infographic revealed which desserts make Yorkshire mouths water, with trifle dominating God's Own County.

The jelly and custard dessert was the most Instagrammed pudding in both West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.

In North Yorkshire, scones topped the list — unsurprising seeing as Harrogate and York both home to Bettys Tea Rooms.

Finally, in South Yorkshire, the Lemon Drizzle was the most photographed and hashtagged dessert.

How the desserts were chosen

GoCompare said: "A list of iconic cakes and desserts was collated from a combination of sources including BBC Good Food, BBC Food, and The Great British Bake Off. 13 cakes were shortlisted based on their cultural prominence and having sufficient popularity on Instagram in the UK.

"20,562 geotagged photos featuring relevant cake hashtags were gathered via the Instagram API for analysis.

"Individual cakes’ maps show what percentage of photos collected for each region feature that cake. The “local favourite” for each region is the cake with the highest percentage relative to the national average."
