WD Huddersfield Ltd has changed  its long-dormant plans for Kingsgate 2  in favour of Kingsgate Leisure – a new scheme which will also include a multiplex cinema.

The company said the £15m scheme, which could create up to 150 jobs, would  boost Huddersfield’s evening economy  by encouraging people to linger in the town centre after work to enjoy a meal and take in a film.

A week long public consultation period opened last Thursday, after which a formal planning application will be entered.

The 56,000sq ft development will include a 20,000sq ft first floor multiplex cinema providing at least two screens along with six themed casual dining restaurants at mall level. It also includes  using Kingsgate’s recently refurbished car park  to provide safe and secure night time parking.

The scheme, which will link to the existing mall, is planned to open in late 2016.

Peter Everest, managing director of WD Huddersfield Ltd, said: “This is an exciting time for Huddersfield town centre. Our proposals will bring a substantial boost to Huddersfield’s night time economy as well adding to the town’s restaurant offer.

“Huddersfield has been lacking in quality, affordable dining offers and Kingsgate Leisure will go a long way to remedying this. If our plans go ahead the scheme will not only provide up to 150 new jobs, but also new opportunities for suppliers and visitors alike."
