It's official: Yorkshire has trumped Lancashire in a battle of local delicacies.

Yorkshire puddings have come in miles ahead of Lancashire hotpot in a nationwide search to find the UK’s best regional dish.

A study by UK diners’ club Gourmet Society, part of the Huddersfield-based Taste Marketing Ltd, found that Yorkshire puddings, a staple of the traditional British Sunday roast was a clear winner.

The puddings beat Eccles cakes, Lancashire hotpot, Cheddar cheese and many others to win the title of Britain’s best regional dish, voted for by food lovers across the country.

The top five favourite UK regional dishes were:

  1. Yorkshire puddings
  2. Cornish pasties
  3. Devon cream tea
  4. Bakewell tart
  5. Cheddar cheese.

Despite haggis being the most well-known regional dish, with 73% of people polled having heard of it, it’s also the nation’s least favourite. Some 15% of people voted the dish as their least favourite.

The East End’s jellied eels came a close second, with 13% voting it as their least favourite.

Matt Turner, Birkby-based director of Taste Marketing Ltd, said: “Brits are spoilt for choice when it comes to trying regional dishes from around the UK.

“It’s nice to see that plenty of regions are still sticking to their roots and backing their local dish.

“I often eat all over the country when working, but there is certainly nothing better than coming back to Yorkshire to enjoy a proper Yorkshire pudding with a Sunday Roast.

“We can understand why it has been voted Britain’s favourite, but it is nice to see a range of dishes from every part of the UK appearing in the top five.”

Top Yorkshire chef Christopher Blackburn has long championed the Yorkshire pudding.

He is behind a website called yorkshirepudd.co.uk and has details of the recipe for the perfect pud.

He details the history of the pudding back to 1737 and the dripping pudding, cooked in the fat from a basting joint.
