The newest addition to Huddersfield’s real ale scene allows customers to take their favourite beers home.
Arcade Beer and Liquor, in Station Street, offers a range of bottles and cans from breweries across the UK, as well as international brews.
The beer shop, which also offers seating for drinkers to enjoy beers in-store, was opened eight weeks ago by friends Jonny Slow and Tom Simpson, who wanted to turn their passion for real ale and craft beers into a business.
Jonny, 32, said he and Tom enjoyed drinking in Huddersfield haunts including the Sportsman, The Grove and the Magic Rock Taproom, but felt that the town was missing a proper beer shop.

“We took inspiration from Manchester beer shops, that offer the opportunity to sit in and have a drink as well as take beer home,” Jonny said.
“We’ve got a passion for this stuff so we though it was time that Huddersfield had a decent beer shop.”
He added that the beer shop had helped people to experiment with new styles and flavours of beer they have not tried before.
“They can try something a bit stronger, or a bit quirky,” he said. “There’s a really good brewing community in Huddersfield, it’s nice to be involved in it. People are coming in and its surprising how much knowledge people have about beer already.
As well as bottles and cans, customers can also fill growlers with the shop’s rotating keg beers.
The duo travel around the UK to meet with brewers and pick up the bottles and cans for their shop, and hope to host Meet the Brewer sessions and other events soon.
As well as UK brews, Arcade also stocks US craft ales, and has featured beers from Denmark, Holland and New Zealand.
“This is something I have always wanted to do,” Jonny said. “I’ve always had a passion for beer.
Arcade Beer and Liquor is open Tuesday-Thursday 11am-8pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.
