Tastebuds in Paddock was the clear favourite when it came to Huddersfield butty shops. Alan Milnes said: "Great staff, tons of filling and cheap as chips", while Vikki Whittaker added "Awesome butties, unique flavours and lovely staff!"
The shop, in Market Street, was recommended by more than 30 people in our Facebook poll — and it's run by former Huddersfield Giants star Jeff Wittenberg.

Offering hot and cold sandwiches and jacket potatoes, Tuckers was another Huddersfield winner. Tucked away near Huddersfield Police Station, fans said Tuckers had 'the best sandwiches in town'. Judy Vickerman said: "Great food, great service, excellent friendly staff, whatever you fancy freshly made in from of your eyes. Good prices and plenty of fillings."

3. Merrie England, Huddersfield town centre

Merrie England, in Kirkgate, was praised for its traditional sandwiches, including hot roast beef and corned beef with pickled onions! Dorothy Hatherley said: "Merrie England has always been my favourite" and Maria Newton agreed: "Can't beat their famous roast beef sandwiches."

A family-run bakery was also popular with our readers. Hadfields Bakery, in Lockwood, one of a chain of 16, was praised for its choice of breads and its chicken tikka salad. The company has celebrated success in Kirklees for more than 50 years — Hadfield’s bakery was formed in 1958 and was bought by the Hodge family in 1959.

Venture into the Packhorse Centre on your lunch break and try a sarnie from Fillings — highly recommended by Examiner readers. If the shop lives up to his name, you should get plenty of bite for your brass!

Walking past a window full of fresh loaves of bread, rolls and cakes is enough to get your stomach rumbling. Examiner Facebook fans said the Bakehouse made "the best sarnies ever', while Tracey Fitzmaurice said "You cannot beat it for quality".

Specialising in pulled meats including pork, chicken, gammon and beef, Carnies in Bridge Street, Lockwood also makes cold sandwiches and boxed salads. Kath Chapman said it makes "gorgeous pulled meat sandwiches", while reviews on its Facebook page praise its bacon sandwiches, pulled pork and ham hock.

Steven Daniels on Facebook certainly felt passionate about his favourite butty shop: "Two Valleys butchers in Meltham, the rest of you are lying." Mary Harrison said it was 'definitely the best'. The farm shop/deli uses pork from its family farm for sausage and bacon sandwiches and to make its pork pies, and uses other local farms and producers as suppliers for its homemade goods.

The delicatessen, in Meltham Road, claims to make more than 1,000 sandwiches to order each week, giving hungry customers the choice or more than 12 meats including its own roast ham and beef. It's impressive 10m delicatessen counter boasts pies, cakes, pate and more — is your stomach rumbling yet?

The Lidget Street deli boasts an impressive 26 options for sandwich fillings, as well as cheese toppings, salad options and a range of breads. Bubble & Squeak won a Local Eaterie award from The Guardian, and Examiner readers were quick to reccommend it as a top butty shop.
