Local ice cream company Yummy Yorkshire has produced a new range of ice cream for Valentine's Day, with a selection of flavours that are supposed to have aphrodisiac properties.

The flavours include carrot and cardamom, sweet almond, a fiery chocolate and chilli, a spicy-sweet honey and ginger and they are putting their award-winning basil ice cream back on the menu.

The ingredients used in these flavours are said to be aphrodisiacs, but what other foods are supposed to be the best for getting you into the mood?

Cardamom

Mentioned as a aphrodisiac in 1001 Arabian Nights, there is some truth to this as cardamom contains cineole which is supposed to increase blood flow round the body.

Almonds

These nuts have a symbol of fertility since biblical times with their aroma being said to arouse females, as they're also high in vitamin E and magnesium there might be some truth behind the myth.

Chocolate

This sweet treat is a favourite gift for Valentines day, but it contains phenylethylamine, known as the 'love chemical', which increases the amount of dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain.

Although not everyone enjoys the burn of chili it's an aphrodisiac due to the fact it causes the body to mimic the feelings of arousal. It increases your body temperature and blood flow while producing physical symptoms like a flushed appearance.

Honey contains a chemicals which help regulate the amount of oestrogen and testosterone in the body as well as the sugars giving an energy boost.

Ginger

Just like chilies ginger helps increase your body temperatures and blood flow.

Not only does it add flavour to your food, it also increases your heart rate and increases blood flow. The Ancient Greeks also used this herb to help cure headaches.

Oysters

Possibly one of the foods that are most associated with aphrodisiacs are oysters. They are rich in zinc which helps raise testosterone and increases the male libido.

Avocado

This fruit has been associated with aphrodisiacs as far back as the Aztecs who referred to the fruit as "Ahuacuatl," which translates to "testicle tree."  The fruit is high in vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.

Garlic

It may not seem the most obvious of aphrodisiacs, mainly due to is affect on your breath, but garlic is full of allicin, which increases blood flow.

Part of the reason bananas are seen as an aphrodisiac are due to their shape, but being full of potassium, magnesium and B vitamins also helps. They also contain bromelain an enzyme which helps increase the male libido.

Figs

One of the oldest recorded fruits they have long been linked with both sexuality and modesty.  They are full of potassium and antioxidants.

Asparagus

French bridegrooms in the 19th century were served three courses of asparagus before their weddings due to it's ability to stir up lust, and with being a great source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin and folic acid there may have been a good reason for it.
