Close your eyes and you can probably picture the scene.

The distinctive sound of bells ringing freely in the wind without a bell-ringer in sight.

It’s a lovely, evocative idea and one which Gledholt Male Voice Choir hopes sets the atmosphere for its festive concert which is fast approaching.

The concert is at St Paul’s Hall in Huddersfield on Saturday, December 7, and is called, Ring Out, Wild Bells.

It takes its title from the concert’s opening piece, the festival carol of that name with music by Percy E Fletcher and words from Tennyson's  In Memoriam.

The music continues with the choir singing a varied Christmas repertoire in full ensemble as well as group and solo voices.

One of the choir members will be contributing amusing verses and a Christmas monologue with other choir members giving seasonal readings.

The programme for this varied choral event has been put together by the choir’s musical director Susan Wilkinson.

Susan is one of the town’s most respected musicians.

She is a long-serving member of Huddersfield Choral Society and as well as singing in the senior choir is musical director of its Junior Choirs, with whom she has worked in one capacity or another since their inception in 1986.

Susan became MD of Gledholt in 2009 and works closely with the choir’s accompanist Jane Robertson.

Jane, who was resident accompanist  for the Alan Simmons’ Mastersingers for many years, is also accompanist for the Huddersfield Choral Junior Choirs.

The choir is looking forward to this event very soon after singing at Leeds Town Hall in concert with Peterborough and Leeds Male Voice choirs.

It has a busy programme in December and looking ahead to next year would welcome new members.

The choir has a wide ranging repertoire from traditional male voice choral songs to opera and religious works.

Gledholt Male Voice Choir has been making music for over 65 years and the singing membership is currently about 45.

Anyone who wants to join the choir or to pop in to a rehearsal to see if this kind of choral singing is for them, would be made most welcome.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights (7.30pm) at Lindley Methodist Church.

Anyone interested should contact the secretary, Robert Emmett on 01484 523711.

But the best way to hear the choir is of course in concert and what more festive start could you have to your Christmas celebrations than the choir’s concert at St Paul’s?

The music (and words) begin at 7.30pm. Tickets on 01484 304461.
