THERE’S a whole string of musical events to look forward to in the Holme Valley starting tomorrow.

The first is at Christ Church, New Mill with the Mastersingers in concert with the church’s own choir as guests.

The Mastersingers is a small choir with a big reputation.

It has often featured in radio and television broadcasts, and will as usual sing a wide range of styles of music.

There will be some joint items with the church choir, including a few with a Jubilee flavour such as Zadok the Priest.

Tickets on the door £6 (concessions £4). The concert begins at 7.30pm.

Christ Church’s choirmaster Dr Geoffrey Lockwood is also conductor of Holmfirth Choral Society which has its next concert later this month.

The choir will sing Dvorak's Stabat Mater and Vivaldi's Gloria at a concert in Holmfirth Civic Hall on Saturday, March 24.

“Dvorak's music is always tuneful and well-crafted, and his Stabat mater is no exception,” said Dr Lockwood.

“This has already become a favourite with society members as they rehearse it, and with the large orchestra Dvorak demands, ably supplied by the superb players of the Valley Sinfonia this should be one of Holmfirth Choral's best concerts.”

The concert starts at 7.15pm and the soloists will be Bethany Seymour, Lucy Appleyard, Jonathan Wilby and David Hall.

The choir will be accompanied by the Valley Sinfonia (leader Mary Barber) and Dr Lockwood will conduct.

Tickets £8 from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre, or at the door.

On Good Friday, which is April 6, the choir at Christ Church, New Mill, will sing Maunder's Olivet to Calvary. Admission is free.
