The Learning and Participation programme at hcmf often throws up some of its most fascinating events.

And this year’s festival looks set to be no exception.

At the heart of the year-round programme will be cultural diversity and ancient traditions.

Both will be explored through contemporary music’s connection with mythology and folk culture.

Mytologler on Sunday November 24, sees hcmf collaborate with another of its Nordic partners, this time the Danish Composers’ Society.

There will be performances and workshops involving artists from the UK and from the Nordic region.

Audiences will be able to get involved in experiments with oral tradition and identity, and there will be travelling workshops within the local community.

Look out for a series of performances across two contrasting venues within a working mill.

Experimental performers will be looking at European folk culture and mythology as they celebrate national and regional identities, as well as the shared things found in the cultures of those countries taking part.

If the aim is to enrich the understanding by artists and audiences of their own culture and identity as well as their context within the wider European community, then it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Work starts on all of this before the festival as artists work with local schools and musicians collecting stories and songs. Watch this space.
