IT IS a concert in which one of the town’s orchestras signs off for the summer.

Huddersfield Philharmonic brings its 150th anniversary season to a close tomorrow with a performance at Huddersfield Parish Church (7.30pm).

This now familiar part of the orchestra’s season is billed “The Phil On Show” and its musical skills and tastes certainly will be.

This is the orchestra having fun mixing styles and composers.

Expect to hear Mack the Knife from Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera. But don’t be surprised to pick out the theme tune from Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

It’s a varied programme with a range of styles which sees the orchestra involved in a sort of musical chairs as they move seats to play in different ensembles, as well as playing as a whole.

Dietrich Buxtehude will perhaps be the least familiar name to some in the audience, but he certainly was famous in his day.

J S Bach (whose Brandenburg Concerto No 4 also features) is said to have walked 200 miles to hear him play.

Soloists in the latter will be orchestra leader Mary Barber (violin) with flute players Ilana Bebbington-Slater and Heather Heath.

The programme also offers music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sibelius and Sousa.

The conductor is Nicholas Smith.

Tickets from Kirklees box offices or on the door.
