A CAST of young performers is helping to delight audiences in a new production of a literary classic by Huddersfield-based Proper Job Theatre Company.

And you can catch the last few days of The Secret Garden at the Square Chapel in Halifax where the show runs until December 29.

This new adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic offers a magical tale of generosity, growing up and gardening.

It is the latest in a series of seasonal shows from Proper Job Theatre Company and features some of Calderdale’s most talented young performers acting alongside the company’s professionals actors.

Colette McNulty who is in Year 10 at Calder High School is playing the principal character, Mary Lennox.

“I love the costume and the lighting, and it was amazing to hear all the audience laughing and clapping,” she said after the first performance.

“They seemed to really like the bit where Mary is going on a boat back to England – I have to stand at the top of this tall ladder that’s on wheels and moves, then the waves and the sea are projected on the wall behind me.

“Everyone says it looks really good, but because it’s behind me, I’ve never seen it!”

Mary’s cousin Colin is being played by 12 year old Ben Bingley.

“It was quite scary performing in front of so many kids, they enjoyed it though and made loads of noise,” he said.

“At the end I heard one of them say, ‘That was awesome.’”

Suitable for everyone age 5+, it is full of loveable characters including a mischievous robin and a Yorkshire lad who can talk to animals.
