HUGH Nankivell is a freelance composer and musician who lives in Torquay.

Until five years ago, Hugh and his family lived in Huddersfield and next week, Hugh brings his music back to the town.

Hugh will be in Huddersfield on December 21 for a gig at Bates Mill in Queen Street South with a band called Natural Causes.

In the band, Hugh plays Fender Rhodes, accordion and viola, Ben McCabe is on drum set, French horn, and guitar, Pat Allison plays bass guitar and clarinet with Chris Dowding on trumpet, flugel horn and swanee whistle.

Supporting acts are Ellen Nankivell and Graham Browning.

The gig has been organised by Hoot Creative Enterprises and entry is free with a donation. Proceeds are for Hoot.

One of the pieces you might hear is a tune written by Hugh and Ben McCabe, arranged by Dean Brodrick and recorded by Richard Evans.

It was recorded as a charity Christmas single by South West Music School and is available to download in the UK.

The single is called What We All Need and is by Assembly aka SWMS.

The SWMS students, staff and tutors make up the instrumental, soloist and choir parts.

The backing tracks were recorded in Bath at the end of October, to which were added over 40 musicians in an eight hour session in November in a studio at Dartington Hall, Totnes.

Hugh said: “As a composer I was looking for who could best capture the energy and hopefulness of an asymmetric song about how what we all need, above all, is music - and who better than the wonderful virtual South West Music School ‘Assembly' who came together with enthusiasm in real time one Sunday in November. Thank you.”
