A QUARTET of impressive soloists is lined up to sing in Holmfirth Choral Society’s performance of Messiah.

The Choral will sing Handel’s much-loved oratorio at Holmfirth Civic Hall on December 8 at 7.15pm.

Conductor Ken Rothery says that this year’s performance will include some less familiar items from Messiah.

“Last year we sang what might be called the normal version and so this time, we shall include some of the music from the appendix.

“Next season we shall not include Messiah at all. Instead, a Christmas concert will take place.”

The choir will welcome soprano soloist Joanne Dexter who last delighted Huddersfield audiences in the role of Liu, which she sang in the concert version of Puccini’s Turandot by Slaithwaite Philharmonic and Holmfirth Choral. Joanne appears regularly with Opera North.

Contralto Bridget Bunch has worked with Scottish Opera and has sung regularly in Germany.

The tenor soloist will be Simon Crosby Buttle, who, like Joanne and baritone David Owen-Lewis, also appears with Opera North.

David Owen-Lewis appeared in Huddersfield earlier this year, singing in Aida in the Town Hall and is well-known for his playing of character parts with Opera North.

The Valley Sinfonia will play under the leadership of Mary Rafferty with Mike Briggs as the solo trumpeter. Geoffrey Lockwood will be at the keyboard.

Tickets are £7 from Pat Steventon on 01484 687643, from Holmfirth Information Centre or on the door.
