A QUARTET of singers will use their musical talents later this month to help raise money towards the restoration costs of a Mirfield church.

The singers are called Semibreve and are from Bolton. They perform a wide repertoire of secular and sacred music, mostly sung acapella.

Semibreve sings at the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield on Saturday, April 20 at 7.30pm.

The group was formed in 2000 by four friends. They found that giving concerts free of charge to raise funds for churches, charities and other good causes provides the perfect excuse to indulge a deep love of music.

The four are Tess Fisher, Margaret Ribchester, Jeff Davies and Mark Head. Jeff has always had strong links with the Community and wanted to do something to help with its appeal – that’s in addition to almost £1,000 which he raised two years ago thanks to a sponsored walk of the Pennine Way.

The concert is billed as music for a spring evening and will feature Irish folk songs, a Hebridean traditional love song, items from John Wilbye’s 16th century madrigals plus work by Jerome Kern, Bruckner and Byrd.

The concert will be held in the Community Church which has been fully re-ordered as part of the restoration appeal.

The church had fallen into a poor state of repair. It had been many years since major work was last carried out on it and as a result it was no longer ‘fit for purpose’.

Much work has been done to renovate the church which receives many visitors and groups each year and has become a place of pilgrimage.

Tickets are £7.50 with proceeds to church restoration fund from Adele Hannah tel 01924 483308
