THERE are some top soloists lined up for tomorrow’s performance by Holmfirth Choral Society.

The choir will be at Holmfirth Civic Hall, (March 23) to sing the St John Passion.

This is a setting by Bach of the biblical narrative according to St John of Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion.

It was written originally for liturgical performance on Good Friday at Bach’s church and has become a favourite with choral societies in this country and elsewhere.

The part of the Evangelist, who tells the story, will be sung by young tenor Andrew McAllister, who last year won the Kirklees Young Musician of the Year (J W Pearce Prize) at the Mrs Sunderland Musical Festival, to great acclaim.

Thom Meredith, Principal of Kirklees Music School and music director of the Colne Valley Male Voice Choir, will sing the part of Jesus.

Other solo parts will be taken by Rhianydd Beaumont, Ruth Pickering, and Chris Pulleyn.

The performance will be accompanied by the Valley Sinfonia, leader Mary Barber.

The conductor will be Geoffrey Lockwood and the performance begins at 7.15pm.

Tickets are available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre, or at the door if available.

Dr Lockwood will be back in his role as conductor on Good Friday (March 29) at Christ Church, New Mill (7.30pm).

The choir of Christ Church, New Mill will present a meditation in music and words for Good Friday.

The music will include settings of O vos omnes by Victoria and Pablo Casals, Lotti’s Crucifixus, Bruckner’s Christus Factus Est, Crux Fidelis supposedly by John IV King of Portugal, Is It Nothing To You? by Ouseley, and Bach’s Rest Here In Peace.
